2008 was a record-breaking year for the video game industry in the UK with 82.8 million games sold. That equates to around 1.9 billion pounds worth of spending from consumers.
The figures came from the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association who create all these spreadsheets and fancy charts with sales figures on them.
Sales were up 23 per cent from 2007 and hardware sales totalled 1.4 billion pounds.
The success is partly down to the Wii which has introduced the family to gaming, though the core gamers may groan at the thought of people playing all the tat avaliable on the Wii.
ELPSA boss, Michael Rawlinson commented:
“Videogaming is increasingly bringing families together with the introduction of so many outstanding family-based console titles,” he actually said.
“These have really opened up the market to those who may never have even considered playing a videogame before.”
