Sonys Week Goes From Bad to Catastrophic

With countless websites and online gaming servers being turned offline things didn’t seem to good in the Sony camp the last few days and it has now been confirmed that Sony Online Entertainment, much like it’s smaller brother Playstation Network, has been breached.

In total approximately 24.6million, yes that’s million, accounts along with 12,700 non-US credit & debit card numbers may quite possibly have been stolen from the SOE’s, until now, secure database. Sony also believes this is a continued attack that originated through the PSN hack on April 16th.

A statement to Gamespot from Sony reads as follows, “This information, which was discovered by engineers and security consultants reviewing SOE systems, showed that personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007.”

“The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands, and Spain.”

The news gets worse as along with credit card details information stolen could include and is not limited too names, addresses, e-mail addresses, birth dates, genders, phone numbers, login names, and passwords. The breach into SOE was only discovered after engineers began probing for the cause of the PSN hack which makes you wonder how much longer this could have gone on unnoticed.

Although the least of gamers worries right now SOE has confirmed that they will be adding 30 days of free game time to all of their customers accounts once they get back online along with a free PSN Store download for each day that they stay offline.

We’ll update you on the situation as and when we get more news.
