Not really the usual sort of thing we here at Console Monster report on, but a Florida family found themselves a little surprised after a hacker got into the familys Xbox 360 console while signed in online, placed a 911 prank phone call informing the authorities that someones had broken into said victims house, stabbed one of the residents and was holding the remaining family members hostage.
“I come out of my room and they’ve got their guns pointed at me and stuff,” said Hunter Gelinas, who owns the hacked Xbox. “I open my door and I had the whole SWAT team down in the front door. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to die.’”
“They all had their guns up like they were ready in case anyone was going to fire on them,” said neighbor Sam Murphy. “When I heard it was a hoax, it kind of made more sense because I figured with this neighborhood, nothing ever really happens here.”
After the SWAT team realised it was all a hoax they confiscated a number of electronic items along with the reported Xbox 360. They don’t know much about the hacker apart from the fact the hack originated in Canada.
“There is nothing there to stop them,” says computer expert Neil Wexell. “Once they gain accessibility to the machine, they can do whatever they want as long as they have the capability and knowledge to do it.”
Basically the authorities are now saying to stop said events from happening, never sign in online. I highly doubt anyone will be following those guidelines.
