Xbox Backward Compatibility Expands to PC and Handheld Devices

Microsoft has announced the launch of Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC, allowing players to access select classic original Xbox games outside of the console ecosystem. This early release initiative introduces cross-platform playability for PC and handheld devices including the ROG Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X.

The rollout begins with four original Xbox titles—BLiNX: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy—all of which are now purchasable on PC. These games are also included with all Xbox Game Pass subscriptions, enabling wider access beyond console players.,

Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming integration means users can play the same titles across Xbox consoles, PC, cloud, and compatible handhelds with a single digital license. Existing digital ownership of these games on Xbox consoles carries over to PC and handheld devices at no extra cost.

Enhanced PC Features and Compatibility Requirements

Alongside expanding platform availability, Microsoft has incorporated new enhancements tailored for PC users. Options include up to 4x resolution upscaling, VSync, customizable fullscreen or windowed modes, anisotropic filtering, improved anti-aliasing, and configurable audio and language settings. These features maintain the original gameplay experience while optimising presentation for modern hardware.

Minimum system requirements stipulate GPUs such as Nvidia GTX 950, AMD Radeon RX 550, Intel UHD 770 or Intel Arc A310. Supported CPUs must have at least four cores, including Intel Core i3-8100 or AMD Ryzen 3 1200 processors, alongside 8GB of RAM, Windows 11, and up-to-date drivers as of January 2026.

Recommended specifications call for GPUs like the Radeon RX 6800 or Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti, CPUs with six cores and 12 threads such as Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600, DirectX 12 support, 8GB GPU VRAM, Windows 11, and current drivers.

Achievements Coming Later This Year

Microsoft confirmed that achievement support—one of the most requested features—will be added to select original Xbox games on both PC and console before the end of the year. The initial four backward compatible titles launching in preview will receive these updates in the coming months.

Access to Xbox Backward Compatibility on PC is available through the Xbox app on Windows 11 for devices meeting the outlined specifications. This initiative represents a continued effort by Microsoft to preserve Xbox’s gaming legacy and extend game availability beyond traditional console usage.
