Marvel’s Wolverine Launches on PS5 September 15 with Expanded Combat and Exploration

Insomniac Games has provided an extensive hands-on preview of Marvel’s Wolverine ahead of its launch on PlayStation 5, scheduled for September 15. The new insights focus on the game’s combat, story, and exploration mechanics, highlighting the experiences awaiting PS5 players.

The preview began with the opening mission set in the wilds of Telambang, where Wolverine reunites with Team X for a mission targeting the facility of anti-mutant billionaire Bolivar Trask. This segment introduces key narrative elements, including Wolverine’s conflicted rage and humanity alongside allies such as Mystique and Sabretooth.

Players engage in combat encounters involving enemies like the Reavers and Omega Red, using Wolverine’s claws not only for melee attacks but also for dynamic movement and launch attacks. The game incorporates a rage meter that builds through combos and unlocks enhanced combat abilities, including healing when fully depleted and more powerful, critical strikes at higher rage tiers.

Combat and Abilities in Marvel’s Wolverine

Game mechanics allow for a range of combat styles; players can perform parries, execute Special Techniques mapped to directional buttons, and upgrade these abilities over time. Adaptations can improve Wolverine’s health and rage meter, giving depth to character progression.

Stealth elements feature through the use of Wolverine’s Enhanced Senses, allowing players to track enemies and perform stealth takedowns. Trask’s use of Ability Inhibitors adds a tactical layer by restricting powers within certain encounters, forcing players to rely on standard combat and dismantle inhibitors to regain abilities.

A highlight of the hands-on was a boss fight against a Sentinel Prototype, where players had to carefully dodge, parry, and coordinate with allies to overcome the heavily-armed machine designed to hunt mutants. This encounter emphasised strategic use of Wolverine’s abilities and collaboration with Mystique and Sabretooth.

Exploration and Story Developments

The preview also showcased exploration in Madripoor’s Lowtown, centred around the Princess Bar, a hub where players can interact with allies like Jean Grey and Wolverine’s teammates. These moments provide narrative depth and character interactions, revealing tensions and relationships within the team.

Exploration encourages players to use Enhanced Senses to locate clues, hidden crates with upgrade materials, and collectibles such as whisky bottles. Players can also discover Nightmare Doors, which transport Wolverine to surreal, timed trials that unlock fragments of his past.

Player customisation extends to different outfits and claw types, offering variations such as the classic undershirt and jeans look or the Weapon X helmeted style. The game presents a balance of story-driven missions and optional activities that flesh out the world and character history.

Marvel’s Wolverine will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on September 15, with Insomniac Games leading development. The preview emphasises the game’s focus on combining visceral combat with narrative exploration.
