Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed that Helldivers 2 is now available to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers as part of the August 2026 update. This development affects PlayStation gamers who have subscribed to these premium tiers, but does not extend to Essential members. Helldivers 2 originally launched in 2024 and has since sold over 20 million copies.
The addition to PlayStation Plus coincides with the release of Helldivers 2’s latest expansion, Devoid of Liberty. This update introduces new objectives focused on combating the Illuminate faction, including destroying spires and gateways, gathering data reconnaissance, and infiltrating enemy structures. Players can access new enemy types described as “ghoulish diversions” created by the Illuminate.
Devoid of Liberty Expansion and Community Challenges
The expansion adds up to 300 new ranks, featuring additional privileges and titles for players advancing through the progression system. A press release from Sony details the setting as planets altered by strange mutations within the Void’s influence, deepening the narrative surrounding the Illuminate threat.
Alongside the content update, Helldivers 2’s community has been tasked with a collective challenge to eliminate 500 million enemies by 18 August. Completion of this challenge will unlock four Helldiver-themed PlayStation avatars for participants.
Cross-Platform Reach and Sales Performance
Helldivers 2 was initially exclusive to PlayStation platforms, quickly becoming the fastest-selling game in PlayStation’s history. The title expanded to Xbox in September 2025, selling approximately 926,000 copies within six days of release. This wide reach underscores the game’s cross-platform appeal, although the PlayStation Plus addition is specific to Sony’s subscription services.
PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can access Helldivers 2 immediately as part of the current August update. The Essential tier continues without this inclusion.
