Sony has provided an in-depth look at Phantom Blade Zero’s combat systems and world building ahead of the action game’s release on PlayStation 5 on October 29. The developer, S-Game, unveiled new details during a recent State of Play presentation revealing combat customization, weapon progression, and the inclusion of renowned kung fu actor Donnie Yen.
The game is set in the Wulin, a dark wuxia universe filled with conflict and intrigue. Players follow protagonist Soul through encounters with NPCs and side quests that can alter story paths and expand understanding of the game’s martial arts-driven narrative.
Weapon Variety and Combat Customisation in Phantom Blade Zero
Phantom Blade Zero offers more than 30 main weapons alongside 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Players can upgrade these arms and equip accessories, allowing for a broad range of combat styles. Options extend from long-range attacks to summons assisting players during battles against various foes such as assassins and hostile martial artists.
The game supports experimentation by allowing players to reforge weapons and reclaim upgrade materials, facilitating adjustments to their combat approach throughout the game.
Difficulty Settings and Donnie Yen’s Contribution
The developer has included multiple difficulty settings to accommodate a wide spectrum of players. Wayfarer mode caters to those focused on narrative experience, while Hellwalker ramps up enemy AI sophistication. An additional challenge, Sixty-Six Days mode, provides a higher difficulty level intended for experienced players.
Kung fu icon Donnie Yen has contributed as a Creative Consultant and is featured through facial and motion capture as the character Mó Yuan. His involvement aims to reflect the authenticity of kung fu in the game’s choreography and presentation.
Phantom Blade Zero will launch worldwide on PlayStation 5 on October 29, with a slightly earlier release of October 28 in the US and select regions.
