The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past Expansion Revealed with New Realm and Chain Weapon

CD Projekt Red revealed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Songs of the Past expansion during gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, providing new details on the anticipated add-on for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The announcement introduces a fresh locale, Letten, along with a new chain weapon for Geralt, as the developer prepares to expand its 2015 RPG with additional content in 2027.

The teaser trailer showed Geralt of Rivia exploring Letten, a realm characterised by rural traditions and an underlying darkness yet to be fully disclosed. Visuals from the trailer presented moonlit skies, sun-kissed fields, and new human and monster adversaries, highlighting the expansion’s distinct setting within The Witcher universe. A notable new gameplay element was demonstrated in the form of a chain weapon used by Geralt to grapple enemies and execute decapitations.

New Details on Letten and Expansion Content

According to CD Projekt Red, Letten is a newly created region distinct from previous locations in The Witcher 3. The expansion’s official description portrays it as a land marked by festivals, rich folklore, and bountiful harvests hiding a ‘long-dormant evil’ beneath its serene surface. The expansion will feature new quests, monsters, and exploration opportunities consistent with the core Witcher experience. Fans can add Songs of the Past to their wishlists ahead of its release, which remains slated for 2027.

At gamescom, Miles Tost, The Witcher 3 level design lead, explained that the expansion represents Geralt’s final story before The Witcher 4 transitions focus to Ciri. Tost noted that the development included contributions from veteran Witcher 3 developers who recently joined from Fool’s Theory, bringing a mix of original team members to the project. He also addressed the chain weapon, linking it to lore established as far back as The Witcher 1 intro.

Platform Availability and Future Updates

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is confirmed for release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. While a precise release date has not been announced, CD Projekt Red reaffirmed a 2027 launch window. The expansion will tie in with the recently announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered edition, which was also showcased at gamescom ONL 2026.

Additionally, the developer confirmed that the expansion will reincorporate Gwent gameplay into The Witcher 3, expanding the card game’s presence in the base game world. Further specifics about Songs of the Past are expected in the months ahead as CD Projekt Red continues to reveal details about the content and its integration across the supported platforms.
