Marvel’s Wolverine Reveals Combat Mechanics and Features Ahead of September PS5 Release

Insomniac Games has provided an extensive breakdown of gameplay mechanics, story elements, and features for Marvel’s Wolverine, which launches exclusively on PlayStation 5 on 15 September 2026. The announcement highlights the focus on close-quarters combat and variety in progression systems that players can expect.

The game’s combat is designed around fast, aggressive encounters characterised by Wolverine’s signature claws and physical attacks. Players can perform a range of Techniques to enhance combat abilities alongside four equipable rechargeable Special Techniques, such as the Tornado Spin and Knee Breaker, which offer strategic options to control and dominate the battlefield. Adaptations further evolve Logan’s combat capabilities, allowing customisation to suit different playstyles.

Wolverine also features a Rage system that functions as a three-tiered resource, bolstering survivability and offensive power as it fills. This system provides players with choices ranging from defensive boosts to unleashing devastating attacks during encounters.

The narrative centres on Logan’s mission to stop Bolivar Trask’s plan against mutantkind, supported by familiar characters including Jean Grey and Team X. The story takes players across various global locations and offers a range of challenges such as combat trials, traversal objectives, and collectibles designed to uncover fragments of Logan’s memories, including hidden whisky bottles.

Your character’s appearance can be customised with multiple suits inspired by different Wolverine incarnations from comics, animation, and film. Alongside the original Battle Reborn suit created by Insomniac, players will have access to legendary outfits like Weapon X, Old Man Logan, and Ultimate Wolverine, with health upgrades and new claw variations tied to these options.

Additional features incorporated at launch include New Game Plus mode with exclusive content, Mission Replay, Nightmare Challenges that test player skill, and a Photo Mode available through a day-one update. Insomniac has integrated over 100 accessibility features carried over and expanded from previous titles, such as High Contrast visuals, English audio description, and options to control game speed and haptic feedback. The game’s violent and gory presentation can be tailored via toggles for blood effects and language filters.

Marvel’s Wolverine will be available solely on PlayStation 5. It is currently available to wishlist and pre-order via the PlayStation Store, PS Direct, and other retailers, with a Digital Deluxe Edition offering exclusive suits, claws, and bonuses.
