Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Marks the Conclusion of the Series

Activision has identified Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as the “epic conclusion” to the rebooted Modern Warfare series, following its debut trailer during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show presentation. This announcement is significant for Xbox, PlayStation and PC players who have followed the franchise since 2019, as it signals the end of the current narrative arc introduced with the Modern Warfare reboot.

The game continues the storyline that started with the 2019 release of Modern Warfare and its subsequent sequels, making Modern Warfare 4 the fourth entry in what is effectively a quadrilogy. Official channels conveyed this message directly via the game’s social posts, inviting players to witness the final chapter.

Future of Call of Duty Beyond Modern Warfare

While this marks the conclusion of the Modern Warfare reboot, Activision has confirmed that the next Call of Duty title, scheduled for 2027, is in development by Sledgehammer Games. This upcoming release is anticipated to introduce a new sub-series, marking the first new major direction from Sledgehammer since Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Since 2019, the Call of Duty franchise has predominantly focused on the Modern Warfare and Black Ops sub-series, with four Modern Warfare and multiple Black Ops titles released in quick succession. Activision’s decision to close this story may reflect a strategic shift away from these established narratives.

Platform Availability and Impact for Console Players

Modern Warfare 4 will launch on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, though it will not be included in Xbox Game Pass on day one. This differs from some previous Call of Duty releases and could influence player adoption, especially given the proximity of other major game launches like Grand Theft Auto 6.

The conclusion of the Modern Warfare reboot may open opportunities for new experiences in the franchise on Xbox and PlayStation platforms, potentially diversifying the Call of Duty lineup beyond its current dominant sub-series. Treyarch, another key developer within the franchise, has also teased development on a new Call of Duty experience distinct from Modern Warfare and Black Ops.

Modern Warfare 4’s campaign, multiplayer, and Warzone integration details remain subject to further updates. However, the confirmation of this title as the series finale sets clear expectations for Call of Duty’s direction over the next several years.
