Bethesda has released the latest update for Fallout 76, titled ‘The Slasher’, which introduces native support for Xbox Series X and Series S. This marks the first time the game can run at a smooth 60 frames per second and 4K resolution on these consoles.
The update was revealed during the Xbox Tokyo Game Show 2026 showcase and brings a new horror-themed questline focused on hunting a serial killer known as The Slasher. In addition to the new narrative content, the update significantly improves performance on modern Xbox hardware.
Enhanced Gameplay and Seasonal Events Added
Alongside native next-gen support, the update introduces expanded weapon crafting options. Unique weapons and armour can now have their Legendary Mods changed, and a fourth Legendary Mod slot has been added. This enhancement allows for greater customisation of gear.
The Slasher update also launches Legacy Seasons, which let players participate in past seasonal events alongside the current one. The first Legacy Season, titled ‘Armor Ace and the Power Patrol in Cold Steel’, runs concurrently with Season 26.
Season 26, named ‘Beware the Blood Moon’, includes Halloween-themed rewards. New seasonal fish become available starting 22 September 2026, accessible by following clues from the NPC Captain Raymond.
Broader Impact on Console Players
This update brings Fallout 76 up to date with performance standards expected on Xbox Series X|S, resolving a longstanding issue since the game’s release prior to these consoles. Native support is also available for PlayStation 5, offering improved performance across current-generation platforms.
Players on Xbox Series X and Series S can now experience Fallout 76 with smoother frame rates and enhanced visuals, which is particularly relevant for those continuing to engage with the evolving game world more than eight years after launch.
The update includes numerous bug fixes and gameplay balancing adjustments. Detailed patch notes are available on the official Fallout 76 website.
