Mojang Studios has revealed The Sift, a new dimension coming to Minecraft Dungeons II on September 29 and to the core Minecraft game in 2027. This will be the first new dimension introduced to Minecraft in over 14 years, expanding beyond the familiar worlds of the Overworld, Nether, and End.
The Sift debuts in Minecraft Dungeons II, launching on Xbox Series X|S, PC via Xbox Game Pass, Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Through this action RPG, players will encounter The Sift’s unique biomes, such as Meadows and Carapace, along with new enemy types and game mechanics that alter exploration and combat dynamics.
The Sift Brings New Gameplay and Environments to Minecraft
Within Minecraft Dungeons II, The Sift introduces a distinct look and gameplay experience. The dimension features shifting environmental effects that impact players and their surroundings, new mobs—both allies and adversaries—and hazardous blocks that change how players navigate the world. Mojang has stated that other biomes within The Sift remain undisclosed to preserve discovery in the upcoming release.
This expansion to the combat-focused Dungeons sequel marks a notable evolution in Minecraft’s multiverse, offering both narrative and mechanical innovations early in the game. As The Sift starts affecting the Overworld in the story, players must adapt to the emerging threat and new rules presented by this dimension.
The Sift’s Transition to Minecraft Core in 2027
Alongside its launch in Minecraft Dungeons II, Mojang confirmed that The Sift will be fully integrated into Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock Editions in 2027. Details on how players will access The Sift within the traditional Minecraft sandbox remain limited, but a brief in-development preview has been shown, suggesting that it will maintain the unique biomes, mobs, and mechanics introduced in Dungeons II.
This update will be significant for Minecraft players on all platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo consoles, as it expands the range of dimensions available to explore and adds fresh content to the world. Minecraft’s presence across multiple consoles and PC means the update will have a broad impact across the gaming community.
Minecraft Dungeons II is available from September 29 on Xbox Series X|S and PC with Xbox Game Pass, allowing players on these platforms to experience The Sift ahead of its wider release. The game also supports Xbox Play Anywhere for cross-platform play between console and PC. Other versions releasing simultaneously include PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch systems.
Further information on The Sift, including additional biomes and features, is expected to be revealed at upcoming Minecraft LIVE events. Until then, Minecraft Dungeons II offers the earliest playable glimpse at this new dimension.
