Rockstar Reveals New GTA 6 Details Including Hurricane Weather and Fast Travel

Rockstar has revealed extensive new details on Grand Theft Auto 6, sharing information that will affect players across Xbox, PlayStation, and other platforms. Highlights include the implementation of hurricane weather, a significantly larger and denser open world, new fast travel options, and a wide variety of wildlife.

The announcements came via a comprehensive feature in Game Informer, presenting deeper insights into the game’s ambitious environmental systems and expansive map design. Rockstar confirmed the presence of hurricanes, an atmospheric element long speculated about, now realised with dynamic weather effects such as heavy rain, strong winds, thunder, and realistic water flow.

Dynamic Weather and Expansive Map Regions

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar’s VP of art for lighting and rendering, explained that the studio has completely redesigned its weather system to support persistent and localised weather conditions. This means players can experience sunny conditions in one area while witnessing storms nearby, complete with effects like rainbows and puddle reflections that signal recent rain. The weather will also influence environmental interactions, including wind affecting debris and character hair movement.

The game world spans six distinct regions within its fictional Florida-inspired setting of Leonida, doubling the size of the map seen in GTA 5. According to Aaron Garbut, co-studio head at Rockstar North, the world emphasises density with a meticulous approach to locations, interiors, and alleys to create a unified and detailed environment. The regions include Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia—which is controlled by a biker gang distinct from the Lost MC—and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Fast Travel, Wildlife, and Side Activities

In terms of movement across the map, GTA 6 introduces a ride-sharing mechanic that allows players to fast travel while sharing journeys with NPC passengers, who engage in unique conversations. Players can alternatively choose to use an in-game social media parody, Snapmatic, to doomscroll during their rides. Unlike previous games, players will not be able to post on this social platform themselves due to narrative reasons involving the protagonists.

Rockstar revealed that over 170 animal species populate the game world, spanning more than 60 bird types, 30 land mammals, and diverse aquatic life including sharks, whales, and turtles. These animals feature authentic behaviours and animations tailored to their various biomes. Players can interact with some animals, such as petting dogs, and tracking of wildlife, including rare species, appears to be a gameplay element. There are suggestions of a hunting mechanic, as indicated by an image showing a character approaching deer with a rifle.

The title will include a variety of side activities such as base jumping, billiards, gyms, kayaking, mini golf, scuba diving, street and off-road racing, zoos, air boating, and jet skiing. Criminal activities will have multiple approaches, offering players options to conduct robberies solo or with a partner, pursuing stealth or confrontation, affecting police responses accordingly. Vehicle theft has been expanded with specialised tools required for high-end cars, and stolen vehicles may have tracking devices, necessitating additional steps to secure or sell them.

Player choice will also influence the relationship between the dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, affecting whether their connection develops beyond friendship. The game’s narrative is designed to guide players across the diverse regions of Leonida, showcasing contrasts between affluent and less prosperous areas through its story progression.
