Xbox Elite Controller Series 3 specs leak reveals new features ahead of possible Christmas release

Details of the Xbox Elite Controller Series 3 have emerged following an apparent leak via the Xbox Design Lab storefront. The information, shared on Reddit’s /r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, outlines comprehensive specs and new features for the upcoming controller, likely signalling a release in time for the holiday season.

The leak includes technical and customisation details that Microsoft has yet to officially confirm. According to the listing, the Series 3 will incorporate advanced haptic feedback technology, using voice coil actuators (VCA motors) alongside impulse trigger motors similar to those found in the current Elite Series 2 controller. This addition suggests enhanced tactile responses designed to improve immersion.

New hardware features and customisation options detailed

The Xbox Elite Controller Series 3 is reportedly set to maintain the modularity introduced in its predecessor, providing interchangeable components such as thumbstick modules with Hall-effect and TMR (tunnelling magnetoresistance) sensors. These sensors are intended to deliver improved accuracy and resistance against thumbstick drift, a known issue with previous controllers.

Players can expect multiple thumbstick types offering varying tension levels, as well as options for silent, low-friction sticks. The D-pad will be available in several designs, including standard, cross, and a textured faceted variant, catering to different play styles and preferences.

Additional new features include an adjustable scroll wheel dedicated to audio controls, a first for an Xbox controller. Rear paddles will come in a diverse assortment of shapes and sizes such as classic, doublewide, short, long, and butterfly-style options, expanding personalisation possibilities.

Design Lab integration and connectivity enhancements

The leak confirms full support for Xbox’s Design Lab customisation service, allowing players to select varied faceplates with different metal finishes, colours, and engravings. This integration could mark the first time the Elite series offers such extensive visual customisation out of the box.

Reportedly, the controller will also support up to 27 mapped configurations combining paddles and toppers, suggesting a high level of adaptability for competitive or specialised gaming setups.

Connectivity improvements include direct-to-WiFi support, which could reduce latency for Xbox Cloud Gaming, as well as simplified device switching among Xbox consoles, Bluetooth-compatible devices, and other sources. These enhancements aim to broaden usage scenarios beyond traditional console play.

Multiple SKUs appear to be planned, with at least two versions differentiated by the inclusion or exclusion of the advanced haptic feedback motors. Higher-tier packages are expected to bundle accessories like charging docks and carrying cases, though pricing has not been disclosed.

The leaks coincide with earlier reports and images of a Series 3 unit surfacing on social media this year. Though Microsoft has yet to confirm any details, the appearance on the Xbox Design Lab storefront suggests an imminent announcement or release, potentially targeting the Christmas shopping period.

These details will be of particular interest to Xbox players seeking a high-end controller option with both performance and customisation improvements over the Elite Series 2. The inclusion of advanced haptics and expanded Design Lab options could distinguish the Series 3 in a crowded premium controller market.

Current information does not specify pricing or exact launch dates. Further verification from Microsoft is awaited to confirm the final feature set and availability.
