Xbox 360 breaks 10 million barrier

The Xbox 360 has broken the 10 million barrier mark in the USA, Microsoft have announced. It is the first current-generation console to break this barrier but was also the first on sale.

While 10 million have been sold in the US, 9 million have sold elsewhere in the world. A brave statement from Don Mattrick, senior vice president of the Interactive Entertainment Business in the Entertainment and Devices Devision at Microsoft (crikey, did they do that on purpose?) said:

“This year will be the largest in the history of the video game industry, with Xbox 360 leading the charge in the U.S. and abroad, history has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry.”

Of course the 360 has seen success on the back of the release of Grand Theft Auto IV which launched the other week and has broken its own records. Not content for this, the release stated that 12 million gamers are now part of the Xbox Live service (we suspect a few from the original Xbox are still floating around or this takes into account multiple accounts!).

Good news for Xbox 360 fans, not so for Sony…
