Bethesda Confirms Fallout 3 and New Vegas Remasters, Fallout 5 Enters Pre-production

Bethesda has confirmed the development of remastered editions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, alongside revealing that Fallout 5 is currently in pre-production. This announcement, made through an official company statement, affects players across all major platforms where the Fallout series is available.

The remasters, which have been subject to persistent rumours over the past year, are now officially in the works with no release dates announced. Details on the scope or enhancements of these remasters remain undisclosed, leaving the timeline for their arrival unclear.

Fallout 5 and New Projects Underway

Regarding the next mainline entry, Bethesda described Fallout 5 as a ‘long-range destination,’ signalling it remains a future project without immediate release plans. The statement also hinted at another Fallout project being developed in partnership with Obsidian Entertainment, the studio behind Fallout: New Vegas, though specifics about this title were not provided.

Obsidian was recently reported to have shifted focus within Microsoft’s portfolio, stepping away from a sequel to its RPG Avowed to work on this new Fallout project. This change comes amid a sizeable round of layoffs at Microsoft affecting multiple studios.

Fallout 76 Expansion and Technical Upgrades

Bethesda also announced a major expansion for Fallout 76 titled Raven Rock, expected in 2027. This expansion will serve as a prequel narrative to Fallout 3, adding new content for the ongoing online experience. Alongside this, Bethesda is testing native versions of Fallout 76 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, aiming to improve graphics and performance, a significant update for console players.

Additional information in the statement highlighted Fallout 4’s continued success following its 10-year anniversary and over 35 million sales, as well as ongoing updates for the mobile game Fallout Shelter.

Bethesda noted plans for Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027, including a live event in Washington, D.C. However, no traditional Fallout Day broadcast will take place this year. The company’s communication reflects a strategic approach to managing expectations amid the extended development cycles of its major franchises.
