The time I had with Blur at E3 2009 was an enjoyable one. It was a surprise to be honest, as the look of it from screenshots made me think of it being a carbon copy of the Midnight Club titles. But as soon as I played the game, I was playing something that was a lot different to my expectations, most importantly it was great fun!
The game was fast-paced, the handling felt good enough for a game of this type. The developers are taking bold change of direction, with a more arcade action based feel and gameplay mechanic, what with its power-ups and speed-boosts, rather than taking the more familiar simulation route as found in their previous racing franchise – Project Gotham Racing,
The races are fast, there is plenty of carnage and the power-ups tip the hat at Nintendo’s Mario Kart title, which isn’t a bad thing at all. What we end up with is a game that breathes new life into the arcade racing genre that has been stale, and a bit dead to be honest, for over a year or two. It also proves that you don’t have to have cutesy cartoon graphics or be riding tiny caricature-driven karts to play a game of this type.
Check out the video from the game, which explains the power-ups used while racing your opponents.
