Dune: Awakening Arrives on PlayStation 5 with Single-Player Mode
Dune: Awakening, the open-world survival game set on the desert planet Arrakis, is releasing on PlayStation 5 on September 22. The PS5 launch introduces a single-player mode, a significant addition to the title which was previously available only as a multiplayer experience on PC. This update addresses one of the most requested features from the game’s community, offering PlayStation players new ways to experience the game.
The single-player mode represents a major change from the original multiplayer structure, where players compete as factions vying for control of the Landsraad. For the solo experience, developers have implemented AI simulations to substitute for multiplayer competitors, adapting core endgame objectives to provide a compelling challenge within a single-player context. Additional gameplay customisation tools will allow players to modify difficulty settings, resource acquisition, and even disable certain features like sandworms. These options also extend to rented private servers for groups of friends.
Optimisations and Performance on PS5
The PS5 version has been optimised specifically for the console, with the user interface and controls tailored to provide a smoother experience. Two performance modes are available: Performance Mode runs the game at 60fps and upscales to 4K on both the base PS5 and PS5 Pro, with the latter not requiring frame generation, whereas the base PS5 employs frame generation to maintain frame rate. Quality Mode runs at 30fps with upscaled 4K visuals on both consoles. More detailed technical information on native resolutions and performance will be released closer to launch.
Funcom has emphasised that Dune: Awakening aims to lower the barrier of entry typical for survival games, focusing on accessibility without reducing the challenge. Tutorials and a narrative-driven progression system guide players from survival basics to more complex gameplay elements, designed to ease players unfamiliar with the survival genre into the experience.
Physical Editions and Regional Availability
In addition to the digital launch on PlayStation Store, Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe will distribute physical editions of Dune: Awakening in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Solutions 2 GO is tasked with physical publishing in North and South America. A retail release is also planned for Japan in October, with the publisher to be confirmed. The timing coincides with the upcoming release of the third film in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy in December, potentially driving additional interest among the franchise’s fanbase.
Reaching A Broader Audience via Consoles
Dune: Awakening’s arrival on PlayStation 5 marks its transition from a PC-exclusive multiplayer title into a broader console release that embraces solo play. This expansion is noteworthy for PlayStation owners who prefer single-player experiences but are interested in the Dune universe and survival mechanics. The technical optimisations for PS5 underline the importance of performance and visual fidelity in appealing to next-generation console players.
There is currently no announced release date for Xbox or Nintendo platforms, limiting access to PlayStation 5 and PC users at launch. The introduction of single-player could influence further developments or versions across other platforms in the future, but no details are confirmed. Console players interested in survival games and the science fiction setting of Dune should note this launch date and monitor for updates on availability beyond PS5.
