EA: ‘One big hit’ can save music genre

The flagging music genre needs just “one big hit” to recover, according toEA’s worldwide music executive Steve Schnur.

Schnur’s comments came in response to the currentstate of music genre, with popular franchises such as Guitar Hero and Rock Band seeing an annual decline in sales. Fortunately, that looks set to change.

Speaking with MCV, Schnur confirmed that EA has a few possible big-hitters on the horizon:

“The video game industry is no different than the movie, music or television business,” Schnur told MCV.

“One big hit will change everything. And at EA, new hits are on the way.”

His comments echo that EA CEO JohnRiccitiello, who told Kotaku that the“music genre is going to recover.”

Schnur, who also oversees EA’s music label, Artwerk, said that game soundtracks should also have a larger place in retail.

“The industry is just now starting to catch up to what gamers have known for years: that the best game scores can – and should – have the same impact of film scores. And that includes their availability at retail,” said Schnur.
