Insomniac Games must have been growing steadily more despondent as each of their most recent projects have taken them further and further away from the dizzying glories of theirRatchet & Clank heyday. In a tenacious and defiant rejection of their recent performance, the studio are hitting back with Xbox ONE-exclusive,Sunset Overdrive, a bombastic and shamelessly absurd action/shooter that comes across as something likeDead Rising’smagic mushroom-chewing cousin.
The breezy abandon the game emits is utterly refreshing and the generous daubs of colour Insomniac have washed over their game undoubtedly sets it apart from the common lot. Up until now we’ve only had pre-rendered CG footage to have a little peek at but today we can all catch a first proper glimpse at one of the most eccentric and whimsical titles of the generation so far. The video seems to be making an honest appeal to gamers by proudly showing the game as what it is and what it is not. This isn’t going to be a title with an earth-shattering narrative, a totally immersive second reality or a preachy political subtext. It’s going to be a rollocking old ride, games gone back to basics, no frills, no pretentions, just unrestrained slightly unhinged carnage. And there’s definitely space on my shelf for just that!
