Sony Santa Monica has officially announced the release date for God of War Laufey as 16 February 2027. The confirmation took place during the dedicated God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where IGN was in attendance.
The title was widely expected to arrive in 2027, following earlier information from Sony stating the game would ship on-disc. This news coincided with Sony’s announcement that it will cease production of physical PlayStation discs starting in 2028, a decision which had generated some community pushback.
Details from San Diego Comic-Con 2026
Alongside the release date reveal, Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, revealed that the next game in the God of War series will follow God of War Laufey. This upcoming title will feature Kratos as the main protagonist and will connect directly to the storyline introduced in Laufey.
Early impressions of God of War Laufey have been mixed. Some players have appreciated its combat mechanics and visual fidelity, while others have raised concerns over what they describe as simplistic gameplay in the game’s early sections. The fact that Kratos is not the central character during much of Laufey has been noted by the community, since the series traditionally revolves around the well-known protagonist.
Platform and Availability
God of War Laufey is confirmed for PlayStation systems, in line with the franchise’s history. The on-disc shipping format suggests a physical release will be available at launch. Given Sony’s intentions to end disc production by 2028, this release marks one of the last major physical PlayStation game launches before that transition.
The game’s narrative opens with a sequence that references events from the 2018 God of War, including Kratos and Atreus performing the funeral rites for Faye. Although Kratos appears briefly during Laufey’s story—such as aiding Faye during her temporary imprisonment—it is uncertain how prominent Kratos will be in other parts of the game, especially as he remains a central figure in God of War Ragnarök.
Sony and Santa Monica Studio have yet to disclose further platform-specific details, subscription availability, or multiplayer functionality ahead of its February release.
