With Grand Theft Auto V so abundant in features, it’d be easy to get in a bit of a tizz when it comes to anticipating exactly what it will feel like, sliding in the disk, hearing it spin up and diving, gun-first, down the gullet of Rockstar’s latest baby. Easier still, perhaps, to completely forget what it is you want to explore and chase down the main storyline with unrelenting, rabid hunger. Perhaps it’s just me, but I found it hard not to do that last time around.
But with such a vastly honed online system, things may be taking a far different turn this time, though thankfully for the story mode, there will be a 2 week delay before the fully fledged online system spreads its wings and fans the flame.
Speaking to Game Informer, Leslie Benzies, president of Rockstar North unveils the truth about exactly how long this idea has taken to achieve fruition, the idea of GTA Online rattling around the Rockstar collective creative consciousness ‘for a long time – since we started work on GTA 3’.
Then, the idea was up in the clouds. Now, we’re just waiting for it to land.
The obvious mass appeal of what Rockstar are doing here can be explained very simply, things that are fun to do on your own are even more fun to do with friends (don’t get any funny ideas, ahem.) It’s surely been quite a battle and a wait ensuring the right technology is in place to make this work, but Benzies seems satisfied,
‘We’ve always wanted to create a world with the complexity of a single-player Grand Theft Auto game with the addition of real players. We wanted a world where people could spend years without getting bored of playing the same content over and over. I think we’ve managed to achieve something very close to our dream’.
And with such confidence from the developers, it’s hard not to find yourself on the edge of breathlessness with wonder at how this will all come to life.
Not long to wait!
