Square Enix and Disney provided a significant update on Kingdom Hearts 4 during the D23 Expo, confirming the game’s release window for late 2027. Alongside the announcement, a new trailer was unveiled, showcasing the inclusion of Pixar’s Coco world within the game.
In addition to the game news, Disney announced an upcoming Kingdom Hearts anime series for Disney+. The series is being developed in collaboration with Tetsuya Nomura, creator of the franchise, and Square Enix, expanding the Kingdom Hearts universe through an original storyline. Disney’s president of Kids & Family, Ayo Davis, stated the new show will maintain the franchise’s distinctive style while providing fans with another way to engage with the world.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Release and Platform Details
Kingdom Hearts 4 will release simultaneously on multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and Nintendo‘s next-generation console, the Switch 2. This cross-platform launch breaks from previous entries that were typically PlayStation exclusives initially, broadening access for Xbox and Nintendo players.
The late 2027 release window marks a long-awaited arrival after the game’s first reveal. Square Enix has positioned Kingdom Hearts 4 as a continuation of Sora’s adventures in the mysterious city of Quadratum, introducing new characters and gameplay elements shown in the recent trailer, which debuted at the event.
Disney+ Anime and Franchise Expansion
The Kingdom Hearts anime series announced at D23 promises to present an original story that complements the game series. Created with involvement from Tetsuya Nomura and Square Enix, the series aims to delve deeper into the narrative and characters that have made the franchise popular across console generations.
Disney confirmed that this series will be an official part of the Kingdom Hearts universe, giving fans a fresh medium to experience the franchise beyond the games. The announcement highlights Disney’s ongoing investment in Kingdom Hearts through multiple entertainment channels.
These announcements follow the game’s first gameplay reveal during June 2026’s Nintendo Direct, where Square Enix confirmed Kingdom Hearts 4’s wide platform release including the Switch 2. The D23 Expo panel, which featured notable franchise voice actors and developers, will be livestreamed on 15 August, providing further behind-the-scenes insights into the game’s development.
