4A Games has officially announced Metro 2039, the next entry in its post-apocalyptic first-person shooter series, with a confirmed release in February 2027 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. The title will support Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing cross-play and shared progress between platforms.
This instalment returns to the series’ Moscow Metro setting, following the first voiced protagonist as they confront a fascist dictator known as Hunter, who now controls the Metro region. Metro 2039 continues the franchise’s focus on narrative-driven gameplay set in a post-nuclear war environment ravaged by radiation and societal collapse.
A recent hands-on session covering two hours of gameplay highlighted Metro 2039’s dense environments, tense combat, and meticulous worldbuilding. The developers maintain 4A’s tradition of simulationist mechanics and diegetic UI, enhancing immersion by incorporating gameplay elements directly into the game world rather than relying heavily on standard on-screen indicators.
Immersive Design and Simulationist Gameplay
Metro 2039’s environments emphasise realism and lived-in detail, ranging from bustling underground settlements to hazardous surface areas. The developers have described their environmental narrative technique as “Frozen Stories,” where every asset placement is deliberate, reflecting the history and atmosphere of each location.
Gameplay features reinforce this approach, with mechanics such as physically setting down a backpack to craft ammunition, monitoring gas mask filter status through an in-world digital watch, and flipping through a physical map folio for navigation. This method minimises reliance on traditional UI and supports the series’ trademark tension and anxiety in exploration.
The crafting system focuses on a limited range of materials—metal, chemicals, and a rarer resource for weapon modifications—streamlining resource management while requiring players to make meaningful decisions about equipment upgrades and survival supplies.
Xbox and PC Availability with Xbox Play Anywhere Support
Metro 2039 will launch simultaneously on Xbox Series X|S and PC as an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning players can enjoy saved progress and multiplayer across both platforms without separate purchases. The game’s release in early 2027 places it among the notable first-person shooters planned for the year, continuing 4A Games’ legacy since the franchise’s start in 2010 with Metro 2033.
With its blend of immersive environmental storytelling, finely detailed simulation elements, and narrative depth, Metro 2039 is positioned to engage Xbox and PC audiences interested in post-apocalyptic survival shooters grounded in a distinctive Eastern European setting.
The latest official information confirms that Metro 2039 will release in February 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, supporting Xbox Play Anywhere.
