Microsoft Disputes Claims of PS5 GTA 6 Pre-Order Dominance Over Xbox

Microsoft has pushed back against reports indicating that PlayStation 5 pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 are outpacing those on Xbox Series X|S by an eight-to-one margin. The company stated the figures do not reflect actual pre-order data and emphasised it has received record-level orders for the Xbox versions of the game.

The claim originated from an IGN tweet referencing data collected via its commerce affiliate linking program, which suggested PS5 players were far more likely to have pre-ordered GTA 6 compared to Xbox owners. Microsoft countered this, telling Windows Central that the affiliate data does not represent comprehensive pre-order numbers and encouraged waiting for real, official figures.

Grand Theft Auto 6, developed by Rockstar Games, is confirmed for release on 19 November for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Pre-orders opened recently, drawing attention not only to sales figures but also to contentious details surrounding the game’s physical release. Reports have indicated there will be no physical disc included with the game’s retail edition, only download codes, a move that has sparked discussion about future trends in game ownership and second-hand markets.

This week also saw new official screenshots showcasing Ultimate Edition content such as exclusive shops, missions, vehicles, and outfits. However, The Hollywood Reporter has cast doubt on claims of a subsequent physical disc release later this year, disputing internet speculation and stating that suggested retail language from Rockstar emails is being misunderstood.

The ongoing debate around GTA 6’s platform sales figures parallels wider industry shifts towards digital distribution. Both Sony and Microsoft have taken steps in recent years to accommodate this trend, but the absence of a physical disc for a major release like GTA 6 marks a significant development affecting console owners who prefer traditional ownership models.

For Xbox and PlayStation communities, these developments are crucial. Accurate data on pre-order and sales performance will be vital for understanding platform engagement ahead of launch, especially given GTA’s status as a marquee franchise. Microsoft’s rebuttal signals the importance both companies place on these numbers and the spotlight they attract in competitive console markets.
