Microsoft Weighs Canceling Marvel’s Blade and Restructuring Arkane Amid Xbox Studio Cuts

Marvel’s Blade Game Reportedly at Risk of Cancellation

Microsoft is reportedly considering canceling the in-development Marvel’s Blade game, a project helmed by Arkane Lyon, following internal delays and budget overruns. The title was originally targeted for a late 2026 release but has reportedly been pushed back to late 2027. The plans to cancel Blade emerged amidst wider restructuring within Microsoft’s gaming division prompted by concern over profitability and recent leadership changes.

Blade was first revealed in late 2023 by Arkane, the studio known for Deathloop, but information and updates on the game have been minimal since then, with the title notably absent from recent Xbox showcases. This potential cancellation impacts a high-profile, exclusive Xbox and PC title that was intended to bolster Microsoft’s portfolio of Marvel-licensed games alongside the broader Xbox ecosystem.

Arkane and Other Studios Facing Uncertain Futures

Arkane itself is reportedly at risk of closure or being sold off by Microsoft as part of a cost-cutting initiative targeting up to five of its internal studios. Microsoft seems to be exploring options for studios including Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs, with some potentially spinning off independently through buyout arrangements.

While Microsoft has not confirmed layoffs or closures, the reports align with CEO Asha Sharma’s recent ‘reset’ memo, which acknowledged serious financial pressures within Xbox Game Studios. The memo highlighted that despite over $20 billion invested in gaming content, platforms, and hardware subsidies, the business has seen revenues decline, leading to calls for greater accountability and margin improvements.

Industry Impact and Broader Xbox Studio Changes

The potential shuttering or shedding of Arkane and others follows previous Microsoft studio closures, including the shutdown of Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks in 2024, and large-scale layoffs across the company in 2025. Such changes directly affect titles like State of Decay 3 at Undead Labs and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II from Ninja Theory, both of which debuted recently at Xbox showcases.

Microsoft has reportedly not ruled out more radical organisational changes, including establishing Xbox as a wholly owned subsidiary or exploring joint ventures or sales. This reflects larger shifts within the company as it balances investments in marquee franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Halo against the need to deliver stronger financial returns.

Employee and Union Responses Amid Uncertainty

The reported restructuring has prompted reactions from unionised Xbox employees, who have called for immediate negotiations and expressed frustration over executive decisions impacting staff stability. Microsoft states it is engaged in ongoing good-faith discussions with labour representatives and acknowledges employee rights to voice concerns.

While Microsoft has yet to confirm specific studio closures or cancellations, the developments underline substantial turbulence within the Xbox division which will affect the availability and fortunes of several upcoming titles. Console players should expect further updates as Microsoft finalises its approach to studio operations and game release schedules.
