Activision has confirmed that the DMZ mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be available early to players who pre-order the game digitally. This early access opportunity begins on October 20, three days before the full multiplayer and game launch on October 23.
The early access period is limited exclusively to digital pre-orders, meaning those who purchase physical copies will not be able to participate until the official release date. Campaign early access opens two days prior, on October 16.
Details on DMZ Early Access and Platform Availability
DMZ, an extraction shooter mode returning to the franchise with PvPvE gameplay, is generating significant interest among the Call of Duty community. Although players experienced multiplayer and campaign elements during the recent beta, DMZ had not been available to test until now. With early access, digital customers on Xbox, PlayStation 5, and PC through platforms including Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, Steam, and Battle.net can deploy into DMZ gameplay ahead of the standard launch.
This mode builds on previous attempts within the series to offer extraction-style gameplay. Earlier iterations included a free-to-play DMZ expansion in Modern Warfare 2 and PvE-focused modes in Modern Warfare 3 Zombies and Black Ops 7’s Endgame, but the upcoming DMZ reinstates PvPvE action and adds features like missions, narrative-driven objectives, and a dedicated progression system.
Progression and Gameplay Mechanics in DMZ
According to Activision, DMZ will contain its own Mastery Camo challenges and demands strategic inventory management. If a player loses a weapon during extraction gameplay, they must either acquire a new one or retrieve it from their Forward Operating Base (FOB), which presents additional tactical considerations.
The introduction of early access for DMZ reflects Activision’s focused efforts to draw attention to this mode ahead of Modern Warfare 4’s full release. This pre-release availability could influence how players prioritise their engagement with the different parts of the game, especially as it will launch shortly before major competing titles.
Players intending to access DMZ early should ensure they have completed their digital pre-order through their preferred platform stores. Further updates and official announcements are expected as release day approaches later this month.
