Activision Blizzard has confirmed that it has axed the Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk and True Crime franchises in a refocusing of its business.
After the flop of Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and Tony Hawk: Shred and the fact True Crime: Hong Kong, originally slated for Christmas 2010, was pushed back into the vague “next year” window, the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
A statement read: “…due to continued declines in the music genre, the company will disband Activision Publishing’s Guitar Hero business unit and discontinue development on its Guitar Hero game for 2011.“
“The company also will stop development on True Crime: Hong Kong. These decisions are based on the desire to focus on the greatest opportunities that the company currently has to create the world’s best interactive entertainment experiences.“
The cuts may also affect the DJ Hero series. Manveer Heir, designer at Bioware, tweeted: “Ugh sorry to hear about the Vicarious Visions layoffs today after Guitar Hero canceled. S**tty. Sounds like Freestyle (DJ Hero) got hit too.”
