GSC Game World has announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will receive a free 2.0 update on 20 August 2026 alongside the release of its first DLC expansion, Hope of Despair. The update and DLC will be available for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via GOG, Epic Games Store, and Steam.
The free 2.0 update, titled Back to the Zone, aims to enhance the base game with numerous changes including graphical and lighting improvements to enrich the Zone’s post-apocalyptic atmosphere. GSC Game World detailed these changes through a gameplay trailer and accompanying blog post on the official S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 website.
Gameplay and Visual Enhancements Arrive with Update 2.0
Back to the Zone introduces significant modifications to the game’s A-Life system, which governs NPC and monster behaviour. Players can expect more varied interactions such as NPCs resting at campfires and bus stops, increased contested battlefields between Stalkers and mutants, and NPCs looting corpses independently from player observation.
The update adds a Custom Rules difficulty mode, allowing players to tailor gameplay settings to their preferred challenge level. Additional features include three types of binoculars for scouting, a new fog mechanic that affects visibility and hearing, and an expanded arsenal featuring four new weapons — the Arev assault rifle, GP3A and SKP designated marksman rifles, and the Fora-230 submachine gun, each with unique variants.
New Content and Tools for Modders
Besides gameplay improvements, the update introduces new monsters and expands narrative scripting, audio, and localisation tools for STALKER 2’s modding suite, the Zone Kit. These enhancements are designed to deepen immersion and provide more creative freedom for the modding community.
The simultaneous launch of Hope of Despair as the game’s first DLC will offer additional story content and new locations, further expanding the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 experience on all supported platforms.
