Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that a new Kratos-led God of War game is in development following the release of God of War Laufey. This announcement was made during the God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where it was revealed that the upcoming title will connect directly to the story of Laufey herself.
The confirmation came from Cory Barlog, head of creative at Santa Monica Studio, who emphasised that the Faye-centred game is intended to build on previous entries and expand the God of War universe. However, no additional details were provided concerning the new game’s title, setting, or release window.
God of War Laufey has a confirmed release date of 16 February 2027. It will be important for PlayStation players given the franchise’s long-standing exclusivity on PlayStation consoles, although whether the new Kratos-led game will remain exclusive or target multiple platforms has not been disclosed.
Future of Kratos in God of War
In a separate interview released by PlayStation in June, Barlog reaffirmed that Santa Monica Studio plans to continue producing games featuring Kratos. The studio’s official social media accounts reiterated this, stating there are still many stories to tell with the franchise’s central character.
While God of War Laufey currently shifts focus away from Kratos to follow Laufey’s story and explores new characters within the same mythological universe, Kratos himself features briefly in early gameplay footage. The extent of his role in Laufey remains limited, as the game focuses on events that coincide with or occur parallel to God of War Ragnarök.
Additional Projects Confirmed
Santa Monica Studio has also announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy, which will return to Kratos’ Greek mythology roots. The remake is in early development with no confirmed release date. This indicates a strong commitment from the studio to both explore new narratives within the Norse setting and revisit the franchise’s origins.
For now, the community awaits further information on the new Kratos-led God of War game post-Laufey, including platform details, gameplay direction, and story context.
