Last Night saw the first glimpses of the next generation of gaming from Sony, the controller, the hardware and even the games were shown at this special event in New York. Everything started off great with a little video about the evolution of Sony and their products; the CEO of Sony Entertainment took the stage and explained about how Sony will move on in the future. Here is a rundown of the whole event
The Controller

The build-up prior to this event there have been different images of what the controller would look like, well Sony finally shows the official controller “The Dual Shock 4”. The controller will feature a touchpad, a Share button and a light bar, players will be able to share a clip from there game with the share button and then tag it and return to playing the game while the clip is uploaded to the web in the background. The controller does use the new PlayStation Eye peripheral similar to Microsoft’s Kinect device. The console does have a nifty setting it allows the player to put the console into the standby mode with a touch of a button from the controller and once pressed again will boot back up instantly and gameplay can be resumed from “the exact spot you left off” Mark Cerny, lead hardware designer on PS4 explained this during the press event.
Sony provided further details in a press release announcing the DualShock 4.
The Hardware
Next up is the hardware (Console was not shown), Sony explained about the power behind the PS4 and how different it will be to its predecessor. Here is a rundown of the specs and the latest press release: “The PS4 system architecture is distinguished by its high performance and ease of development. PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores and a state of the art graphics processor.
The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) has been enhanced in a number of ways, principally to allow for easier use of the GPU for general purpose computing (GPGPU) such as physics simulation. The GPU contains a unified array of 18 compute units, which collectively generate 1.84 Teraflops of processing power that can freely be applied to graphics, simulation tasks, or some mixture of the two.
PS4 is equipped with 8 GB of unified system memory, easing game creation and increasing the richness of content achievable on the platform. GDDR5 is used for this memory, giving the system 176 GB/second of bandwidth and providing a further boost to graphics performance. The end result for gamers is new games with rich, high-fidelity graphics and deeply immersive experiences that shatter expectations.”
The Games
During the press event some games were sown and some new IP’s for the console:
- Knack
- Drive Club
- inFamous: Second Son
- The Witness
- Deep Down – Working Title (New IP from Capcom)
- Diablo III (also confirmed for Playstation 3)
- Killzone: Shadow Fall
- Watch Dogs (Confirmed as a Playstation 4 Launch Title)
No price or even a showing of what the console will look like, but that will be seen at E3. The PlayStation 4 will be released this holiday 2013, and more news will be told here at Console Monster.
Please comment below and let us know what you all though of the event and would this make you want to buy the console or wait for Microsoft to show the Next Xbox or Xbox 720.
