Looks like developers Treyarch have managed to achieve the sales they have been working hard for many years to obtain, taking the lead for the Call of Duty’s highest success so far. Yes that’s right, somehow, as if by magic, Call of Duty: Black Ops has broken day one entertainment sales records.
Within the first 24 hours of availability the game has an estimated sell-through of $360 million, and that’s in the US and UK alone. Moving 5.6 million copies of the game, it’s already clear that Treyarch have achieved a monumental success as they surpass that of Modern Warfare 2’s 4.7 million.
“There has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records for two consecutive years and we are on track to outperform last year’s five-day global sales record of $550 million,” said Kotick.
“The game’s success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand. Call of Duty: Black Ops is the finest game that Treyarch has ever made and raises the bar for online gameplay by delivering the deepest and most intense Call of Duty experience yet.”
He went on to add: “The Call of Duty franchise has over 25 million players around the world that are engaged in billions of hours of online gameplay, and we are committed to supporting them with new content and features on a more frequent and regular basis.”
Fingers crossed that next time they can afford to release the game without increasing the retail price, as I am sure they can make more than enough profit for a small country without needing to overcharge the players.
