Xbox 360 still has ‘a lot of headroom’, says Bungie

Destiny might be the most “next gen” of multiplayer games – a game so “next gen” that it brushes its teeth with a holographic toothbrush, beamed direct from a server in space – but that doesn’t mean it’ll be a shambles on Xbox 360 or PS3. So sayeth Bungie, anyway.

“The current generation of consoles, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, they have a lot of headroom still for us,” technical director Chris Butcher observed in an interview withGame Informer. “We have the most optimized game engine we’ve ever produced for these consoles. We’re getting at the point now where we are wringing pretty much every ounce of juice out of the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.”

So what does that equate to in terms of things like player headcounts? Alas, Butcher stopped short of specifics. “We’re running higher character counts and higher player counts than we thought would even be possible on these things because we’re using every ounce of the CPUs and the SPUs and we’re offloading stuff to the graphics processor.
