Microsoft has expanded its Xbox Disc to Digital program by adding support for SEGA games and introducing automatic digital license grants when supported discs are inserted. The update affects Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles, offering players a streamlined way to convert physical discs into digital copies.
The Disc to Digital feature, which has been in testing with Xbox Insiders for about a month, allows players to insert participating physical discs to receive a digital license for the game. Once licensed, the game can be played without requiring the disc, and digital access extends to Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming where applicable.
SEGA Titles Join Disc to Digital Program
SEGA has joined a growing list of publishers supporting the Disc to Digital feature, with several titles already eligible, including Persona 5 Royal. This addition potentially adds around 44 SEGA games to the service. With SEGA’s inclusion and Ubisoft’s recent participation, the program now supports 1,585 games, leaving 205 known titles without digital entitlement under the current testing phase.
The program’s expansion provides more options for Xbox players looking to consolidate their physical libraries into digital collections. It also aligns with Microsoft’s broader push to enhance backwards compatibility and cloud gaming integration across Xbox platforms.
Automatic License Activation and Improved User Experience
An important change accompanying SEGA’s addition is the shift to automatic digital license grants. Previously, users had to manually initiate digital entitlement from the menu after inserting a disc. The update now triggers this process automatically when a supported disc is detected.
The notification system has also been refined. The feature shows a full-screen explanation only on a player’s first digital entitlement, with subsequent redemptions appearing as unobtrusive toast notifications. These changes aim to make the transition from physical to digital more seamless and less interruptive for users.
Despite the increase in supported publishers, some major names such as Bandai Namco and Square Enix have yet to participate in the program. However, given Square Enix’s recent positive engagements with Xbox, their inclusion remains a possibility in the future.
The Disc to Digital feature remains in its testing phase, but its rollout continues to add significant value for Xbox players who prefer physical media yet seek the flexibility of digital ownership. These enhancements signal Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to improving the Xbox ecosystem on both Xbox One and Series X consoles.
