Microsoft Revives Age of Empires 3 DLC with The Baltic Powers Expansion

Microsoft has announced that the Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition DLC, previously cancelled, will now launch on 10 September 2026. The expansion, titled The Baltic Powers, adds new content for the game’s community following an initial cancellation earlier this year.

The DLC was first revealed in February 2023 with a planned release window in late 2024. However, Microsoft later delayed the expansion indefinitely, citing a crowded project lineup within the franchise. In January 2026, the DLC was formally cancelled amid internal restructuring of Microsoft’s gaming division.

The Baltic Powers DLC details and features

The Baltic Powers includes two new civilisations, the Danes and the Poles, designed to offer distinct strategic approaches. The Poles focus on a low-cost building economy with civic bonuses and powerful cavalry units, while the Danes utilise economic advantages through the Customs House mechanic and defensive units like the Snaphane and Gunboat levies.

In addition to the new civilisations, the DLC features over 25 new maps, more than 50 hero customisation options, and two new game modes: Regicide and Independence. Regicide challenges players to eliminate the enemy Regent, while Independence removes Home City support, requiring players to rely solely on strategy and battlefield tactics.

Impact on Age of Empires 3 players and Xbox ecosystem

The return of The Baltic Powers DLC represents a notable reversal from Microsoft amid recent cancellations and layoffs hitting its Xbox gaming division. The announcement comes after a period marked by significant restructuring and job cuts at Microsoft’s Xbox team, which affected thousands of employees.

Microsoft acknowledged the ongoing passion from the Age of Empires 3 community as a key factor influencing the decision to proceed with the expansion. The announcement on the Age of Empires blog highlights the developer’s intent to deliver fresh challenges and content to maintain the game’s longevity.

This update is relevant to players on Xbox and PC platforms where Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition is available. While the game is traditionally PC-focused, Xbox support forms a part of the broader Microsoft ecosystem strategy. The confirmed release date allows fans to plan for the expansion’s arrival this September.
