Microsoft has introduced a new feature that grants digital entitlements for supported disc-based games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles. This development allows players who own physical copies to access their games digitally, providing greater flexibility across the Xbox ecosystem.
The rollout will begin with Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026, as part of Microsoft’s initiative to preserve access to games across hardware generations. Players can claim the digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc and launching the game, which then links the game digitally to their account.
Support for Thousands of Titles on Xbox One and Series X
At launch, this feature covers thousands of games, with plans to expand further over time. Once claimed, the digital entitlement enables players to benefit from Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, where supported, while still maintaining the traditional use of the physical disc.
This measure is addressing the challenge of long-term game preservation as console technology and distribution models evolve. By associating physical game ownership with a digital license, Microsoft aims to offer players confidence that their libraries will remain accessible in the future.
Access and Feedback for Xbox Insiders
Xbox Insiders have been invited to test the feature and provide feedback via the Xbox Insider Hub app on Xbox One, Series X|S, and Windows PC. Microsoft also directs testers to their Xbox Insider subreddit for support and discussion moderated by official staff.
Those not yet part of the Xbox Insider Program can join to participate in early testing and contribute to ongoing development. Microsoft continues to monitor player responses and plans iterative improvements to this feature.
This new digital entitlement system currently applies only to supported disc games on Xbox One and Xbox Series X models and represents Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to bridge physical and digital game ownership.
