Bandai Namco has confirmed that Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve will include the series’ fan-favourite Annihilation Battle mode. The announcement comes alongside the release of a new story trailer ahead of the game’s launch on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2026.
The story trailer offers a look at the characters aboard The Endurance and their experiences amid the ongoing conflict that forms the backdrop of the title. Players will engage in intense dogfights against elite enemy ace squadrons from Sotoa, confronting new aerial adversaries and devastating superweapons threatening the Federation of Central Usea (FCU).
Annihilation Battle missions return with strategic freedom
The Annihilation Battle mode challenges players to destroy all identified enemy targets within a time limit, providing a high degree of tactical freedom. Key objectives include facilities such as solar power plants, airbases, oil tanks, and ammo dumps. Players can replenish their weapons mid-mission by returning to supply lines, allowing for varied approaches to mission completion.
Producer Manabu Shimomoto stated that this mission type embodies a core element of the Ace Combat series: the player decides how and when to eliminate enemies. The mode also incorporates environmental interactions, such as triggering chain reactions by destroying flammable objects to cause wider destruction, adding depth to players’ strategies.
New threats and strategic targets in the campaign
The campaign mode features new formidable enemy installations, including the Megafloat Fatsia, an expansive artificial island serving as a Sotoan arms factory and supply base. The Megafloat integrates advanced defensive systems like CIWS, SAM batteries, railguns, and UAV sensor nodes, extending its defensive capabilities over a 400 km radius.
Another notable enemy asset is the Tonitrus Spear, a kinetic orbital weapon firing metal rods at targets from low Earth orbit. This satellite weapon offers a formidable challenge distinct from traditional aerial combat threats.
Players can expect additional unidentified enemy units and challenges as they progress through the campaign. Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is confirmed as a PlayStation 5 exclusive at launch, with pre-orders for the Deluxe Edition providing early access and bonus content.
