EA has announced it will remove all paid progression options from the offline Road to Glory and Dynasty modes in EA Sports College Football 27. The decision comes after substantial negative community feedback and a campaign opposing microtransactions in offline gameplay. The change is scheduled to take effect on July 11, 2026, five days after the game’s early access launch on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 6.
The publisher issued the update via social media, acknowledging that players will no longer be able to spend College Points in these offline modes once the removal is implemented. EA encouraged players who have accumulated points to use them before the changes take effect. This measure aims to address complaints regarding the introduction of paid progression systems that previously required players to purchase upgrades to progress faster through the game.
Community Backlash Over Microtransactions in Offline Modes
Shortly after launching to mostly negative reviews on Steam, College Football 27 faced criticism for replacing prior XP boosting options with microtransactions costing between $9.99 and $149.99. Previous entries allowed players to increase progression speeds through adjustable settings without needing to spend real money, but this was removed in the 2027 release.
Content creators and players expressed significant frustration that these paid options appeared without prior mention before launch. The #CFBPlayDontPay movement emerged on social media, with notable figures like creator Bordeaux highlighting the excessive cost—up to $100—to reach the maximum coach level in modes that are traditionally offline single-player experiences.
Players criticised the design choice as punishing those who prefer offline play. Feedback stressed how XP gains are slower on lower difficulties, pressuring users either to spend money or play on challenging settings to maintain reasonable progression speeds. This shift sparked concerns over gameplay balance and accessibility.
Future XP Settings and Impact on Progression
In response to the backlash, EA confirmed plans to reintroduce XP modifiers in a forthcoming patch. Road to Glory players can expect settings allowing up to 1.5x XP gains, while XP in Dynasty mode will be tied to difficulty levels. However, these adjustments retain restrictions that some players find less favourable compared to previous titles.
The update also noted that disabling in-game mechanics like player Wear & Tear will affect XP gains, leading to further debate about gameplay incentives. Despite restoring some progression options, the removal of microtransactions from paid progression marks a reversal in policy for EA Sports College Football 27’s offline modes across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
