Halo Studios undergoes layoffs following Campaign Evolved launch amid development challenges

Halo Studios has announced layoffs following the recent launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, affecting multiple employees as confirmed through LinkedIn updates. The cuts come shortly after the game’s release and amid reports of challenging development conditions within the studio.

Several team members, including producer Nick Treitman and Scrum Master Paul Morris, have confirmed their positions were impacted by the layoffs. Treitman noted his departure after over six years at the studio, referencing the difficulties currently facing the gaming industry workforce. Morris also acknowledged the tough job market and his exit following a successful game launch.

Development complications and project cancellations

Reports indicate that Halo: Campaign Evolved experienced a problematic development cycle, which reportedly consumed more resources than initially planned. These issues contributed to the cancellation of other projects, including a separate Halo multiplayer title. Halo Studios initially used a modified version of the Halo: Reach engine, Blam, layered with Unreal Engine 5 graphics and assets for the remake.

The combination of legacy and modern technologies complicated development, especially when external studio Abstraction failed to meet deadlines and was subsequently removed from the project. This forced Halo Studios to discard much of Abstraction’s work and rebuild assets in-house using the Blam engine. The challenges bear resemblance to those faced during the development of Halo: Infinite, which also encountered contractor delays and engine reworks.

Impact within Microsoft and gaming industry

The layoffs at Halo Studios are part of a broader restructuring effort by Microsoft, which has confirmed a total of 3,200 job cuts, with half occurring in July. The move reflects the adaptation companies are undergoing in response to shifting conditions in the gaming sector.

This development affects fans and players across platforms where Halo titles appear, as the studio navigates both its internal challenges and external market pressures. Future Halo projects were expected to leverage Unreal Engine 5 to streamline creation processes, but the transition continues to present difficulties for the studio.

Halo: Campaign Evolved remains available following its recent launch, with Halo Studios adjusting its workforce and development strategies in the aftermath of the release. Further updates on the studio’s direction or project pipeline have not been disclosed.
