Rockstar Games has outlined significant changes to the Wanted system in Grand Theft Auto 6, alongside the introduction of a Criminal Profile mechanic designed to reflect player behaviour more dynamically. These updates affect the game’s core mechanics and will be relevant to players on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the release date set for 19th November.
The revamped Wanted system reintroduces the classic six-star alert level but incorporates more detailed police awareness. According to Rockstar, the authorities can now track specific information such as the player character’s clothing, the vehicle they are driving, and whether they were seen with other characters. These elements are used to generate suspect descriptions that affect how players evade law enforcement.
Witnesses are essential to triggering police response, meaning crimes must be seen or reported—for example, via alarm activation—for the Wanted system to engage. Players can actively try to mislead police by changing vehicles, altering their outfit, or splitting from partners if the suspect description includes such details. This adds a new layer of strategy to eluding capture within the open world.
Criminal Profile Reflects Player Conduct
In tandem with the Wanted system, GTA 6 introduces the Criminal Profile system, presented as a more nuanced evolution of Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honour mechanic. Unlike RDR2, where player morality could shift unpredictably, GTA 6’s Criminal Profile takes context into account, registering player actions as justified or unnecessary.
Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told IGN the system acknowledges defensive actions such as firing back at pursuers or self-defence without penalising the player. However, unnecessarily escalating situations will negatively impact the profile. Acts of kindness like feeding stray animals are also recorded, contributing positively to the player’s standing.
Nelson emphasised that the game is structured around playing as criminals, so the profile reflects behaviours consistent with avoiding excessive attention. Players who commit crimes but avoid escalation—like hit-and-runs or fleeing without violence—will generally maintain a more neutral Criminal Profile.
Implications for Gameplay on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S
These changes to police interaction and character conduct add fresh complexity to GTA 6’s gameplay, introducing more realistic consequences and subtle player choices. The detailed Wanted system and Criminal Profile mechanics require players to consider their approach to law enforcement and in-game relationships, potentially influencing narrative outcomes and world reactions.
GTA 6’s release date remains confirmed for 19th November on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, making these updates integral to the new generation experience on these consoles. The enhanced systems replace elements familiar from previous Rockstar titles, aiming for a more immersive and responsive open-world environment.
Rockstar’s recent workforce reductions and union disputes were also noted alongside these gameplay announcements but remain separate from the game’s official mechanical details.
