Silent Hill: Townfall First-Person Survival Horror Detailed in New Hands-On Report

PlayStation has released a hands-on preview of Silent Hill: Townfall, providing new insights into the upcoming survival horror title. The report focuses on the game’s first-person perspective, narrative elements, stealth and combat mechanics, and utilisation of PS5 Pro hardware, revealing key gameplay and technical details that will affect console players.

The game centres on Simon, who arrives at the eerie, fog-dense Scottish town of St. Amelia following a cryptic letter. The narrative blurs the line between reality and hallucination, with Simon investigating the town’s mysteries while encountering strange phenomena and empty streets that hint at hidden dangers. Much of the atmosphere is built around the dense fog and unsettling environments typical of the Silent Hill series.

First-person survival horror and puzzle elements

Silent Hill: Townfall deviates from previous entries by shifting the survival horror experience into a first-person perspective. This change creates more intense, claustrophobic encounters with the hostile creatures populating St. Amelia. Combat relies on limited melee weapons like wooden clubs that degrade after repeated use, emphasising restraint and evasion. Players can block enemy attacks but must carefully choose when to fight or flee.

The game’s puzzle design also integrates directly into the story. A portable CRTV device is used to tune into signals that offer clues about the past of the town and a key character, Zoe. These clues help piece together a larger narrative connected to a medical outbreak affecting St. Amelia. Players explore locations such as Zoe’s empty apartment and workplace to gather relevant objects and uncover hidden details.

Stealth mechanics and enemy encounters

Stealth is central to surviving Townfall’s hostile environment. The CRTV allows players to detect monsters through fog and walls by switching to different signals. Players can use environmental cover such as cars, walls, and fences to avoid detection. The game provides hiding spots like closets and sheds to lose pursuers, reinforcing a tactical approach over aggressive combat.

Different enemy types introduce varied threats. Alongside axe-headed creatures restrained by industrial straps, players face ranged attackers that can ensnare Simon, requiring cautious movement. Firearms such as a revolver appear later in the gameplay, but their use draws additional enemies due to the loud noise and slow reload animations, further encouraging stealth over direct confrontation.

PS5 Pro enhancements and DualSense integration

Silent Hill: Townfall leverages the PS5 Pro upgrade to enhance visual fidelity and performance. This includes advanced ray tracing, high-resolution textures, and the use of PS5 Pro’s upgraded screen-space reflections (PSSR) technology. The game offers settings for both 30FPS Quality and 60FPS Performance modes, catering to player preferences.

The DualSense controller features are also heavily used, with haptic feedback intensifying combat impacts and environmental interactivity. The game incorporates motion controls for specific actions, such as tuning the CRTV or aiming firearms, adding tactile immersion. The developers sought realism by basing the town’s design on real Scottish coastal locations and using a 2.35:1 cinematic aspect ratio to heighten the horror atmosphere.

The hands-on report concludes with confirmation that Silent Hill: Townfall continues the series’ tradition of blending psychological horror with supernatural elements, now enhanced by modern PS5 technology and a fresh first-person viewpoint. The game remains focused on survival, stealth and uncovering the dark secrets of St. Amelia.
