Sony has announced the rollout of Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a new AI-driven upscaling technology for the PlayStation 5. This development brings advanced image-quality improvements previously reserved for the PS5 Pro to the base PS5 model, affecting PlayStation players looking for enhanced visual fidelity.
QSSR represents a streamlined and optimised evolution of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) technology initially available on the PS5 Pro. According to Sony, the original PSSR’s computational demands made it unfeasible for the standard PS5. However, QSSR’s newly designed neural network architecture and hand-tuned implementation are tailored to run efficiently on the PS5’s hardware.
This new AI upscaling system analyses game imagery at a pixel level, improving detail and temporal stability more effectively than traditional upscaling methods. QSSR is positioned as a performance tier below PSSR, which Sony maintains as the premium solution exclusive to PS5 Pro users.
First Games Featuring QSSR on PS5
The first titles to receive the QSSR update are Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yōtei by Sucker Punch Productions. Both games have been patched to include QSSR as an optional graphics setting, bringing refined graphical clarity and stability improvements to PS5 players without requiring the more expensive Pro hardware.
Insomniac Games highlighted that QSSR enhances the pixel-level clarity across diverse in-game environments, including locations such as Madripoor and Shinjuku in Marvel’s Wolverine. Meanwhile, Sucker Punch noted that QSSR provides finer detail resolution and temporal stability in character models and environmental textures within Ghost of Yōtei, aspects not previously attainable on the base PS5.
Broad Availability for PlayStation Developers
Sony has stated that QSSR will be made broadly accessible to PlayStation developers moving forward. This enables future PS5 games to leverage the AI-based upscaling technology, potentially improving the graphical quality for a wider range of titles on the platform.
QSSR arrives as part of Sony’s Project Amethyst collaboration with AMD, focusing on AI graphics enhancements. The technology marks a significant adaptation that balances visual fidelity advancements with the practical performance constraints of the PS5 console’s hardware architecture.
At present, QSSR is available through updates to Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, with no announcements yet on additional titles employing the technology. Sony continues to support the base PS5 with enhancements that narrow the visual experience gap between it and the PS5 Pro.
